April 14, 2008 Day 4 in Vanuatu

hey all thanks for joining :) Here's my first post...pics to follow later...

Sitting here in the PCV lounge with A/C yeah! Very hot and humid here but I'm drinking liters and liters of water <--- getting used to the metric system over here :) We all went snorkeling the other day and I got to see some amazing tropical fish and coral reefs...I also accidentally kicked some coral and got a pretty good scrape on my foot, but I'm okay. I played beach volleyball and kicked some peace corps booty :) We all went out to this outdoor theater and ate pizza, which I've been eating too much of surprisingly. Yesterday we had our first day of in class training. We got a welcome from the whole PC staff and they served us "lap lap" which is a huge feast that the women of Vanuatu, called the "mamas," prepare. There was a live band there and lots of flies :) The food was good...fish, beef, root crops, coconut, grapefruit, oranges, bananas, rice, etc.

We sat underneath a grapefruit tree and ate lunch...some of the grapefruits were the size of bowling balls, no joke. We then received our medical kits...two briefcases full of antibiotics, bandages, and more. I'm a small pharmacy now, hehe. We got out early and I went to this yoga center here in the city. One of the volunteers here, Carol, is an experienced yoga instructor, so we did yoga for about 90 minutes and I am SO sore today :)

We had some more medical training today about malaria and got our prophylaxis medication and I got some vaccinations...typhoid, hep A, and a flu shot. The typhoid shot hurt like hell, but it was okay. The medical officer here is Australian and she's awesome I love her. After my vaccinations I had my interview with the country director. Based on that interview they'll try to find a place for me. They told me they didn't have one site that stuck out as perfect for me but there are several options. I attribute that to me being so flexible and open-minded ;) They said they should know within a few more weeks. Maybe they just want to make sure that I'm in this for the long haul.

No sunburn or bug bites so that's good...I've been inside a lot doing training though. Tonight I'll probably go to another nakamal and talk to some more volunteers. This Sunday they're moving us to our training village called Epau in northern Efate, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to use a computer there, but I will definitely be able to access these computers at least a couple more times this week.
